What content promotion is, and why it is not ad creative
Most B2B companies have a content creation habit and no distribution budget. The post goes out, a few hundred followers see it, and the next one goes out. Creating content without a distribution budget is building a product with no sales team.
Content promotion inverts the order: find the thing that already worked, and put money behind it against the accounts you care about. The best ads on LinkedIn are almost never made as ads — they are organic posts that earned attention first and were given budget second.
What is worth promoting
- Organic posts that already performed. Market-tested, native by construction, and carrying real social proof. Run as thought leader ads from the author’s profile so they keep the face and the voice.
- Earned media. A trade mention, an analyst note, a podcast appearance. You already paid for it in effort; amplification decides whether the right accounts ever see it.
- Research and reports. The document nobody downloaded because nobody knew it existed. Document ads put it in the feed without a form in front of it.
- Founder and executive content. The highest-performing format on LinkedIn for B2B, and the one most companies leave entirely to chance.
- Customer proof. Case studies and testimonials aimed at the accounts most like the customer in them.
The channels, and what each one is for
- LinkedIn — the only channel with real B2B targeting. Thought leader ads for the author’s content, document ads for reports, video for demonstration. This is where promotion is aimed at a named account list.
- Reddit — where technical buyers actually are. Community and interest targeting, and content that has to earn its place rather than announce itself.
- Meta — cheap frequency against people LinkedIn already qualified. The second and third exposure, at a fraction of LinkedIn’s CPM.
- Paid search — not promotion, but the capture layer that harvests the branded searches good promotion causes.
Amplifying earned media specifically
PR and paid social are usually run by different people with different targets, which is why a hard-won press mention reaches almost none of the accounts it was meant for. The fix is mechanical: take the piece, promote it from a founder’s profile to the target account list, retarget everyone who reads it, and hold frequency on Meta against the same audience for the following month. The credibility of third-party coverage plus the targeting of paid social is a stronger combination than either alone.
How it is measured
Landing page clicks rather than LinkedIn’s click field, which counts likes and profile views. Penetration and frequency against the target list, because reaching 10,000 of the right people ten times beats reaching 100,000 once. Retargeting pool growth, which is the real output of a promotion programme. And influenced pipeline by account, because the point was never the content.
Frequently asked questions
What is content promotion in B2B?
Putting budget behind content that already exists rather than creating ad creative. The best-performing organic post, the report nobody read, the podcast episode, the piece of earned media — distributed to a named account list on LinkedIn, Reddit and Meta. Content distribution is a bigger problem than content creation for most B2B companies.
How do you amplify earned media?
A mention in a trade title or an analyst report is credibility you have already paid for in effort. Amplification puts it in front of the accounts that matter: promoted on LinkedIn from a founder’s profile as a thought leader ad, retargeted to site visitors, and held at frequency on Meta against the same list. The press hit reaches the people it was meant for rather than whoever happened to read the publication.
Should you promote organic posts or make ad creative?
Promote the organic posts that already performed. They are native by construction, they have social proof attached, and they have been market-tested by an audience. Thought leader ads exist precisely so a person’s post can carry budget without becoming an ad.
Does Reddit work for B2B content promotion?
Where the ICP is technical — developers, security, data, infrastructure — yes. Those buyers are in specific subreddits daily and are sceptical of anything that reads as an ad, so a genuinely useful piece promoted in the right community outperforms a feed ad. For a general B2B SaaS audience it is a secondary channel.
How is content promotion measured?
Landing page clicks rather than LinkedIn’s default click field, penetration and frequency against the target account list, retargeting pool growth, and influenced pipeline by account. Not impressions, and not engagement rate on its own.
