The number you have been quoted is the wrong click
LinkedIn's Campaign Manager shows a clicks field and a CPC built on it. That field counts likes, comments, shares, "see more" expansions and clicks on the author's profile alongside clicks through to your site. On thought leader ads, 91% of those clicks never reach a landing page: total CTR 4.56%, landing page CTR 0.43%. Divide spend by total clicks and a thought leader ad looks about 80% cheaper than it is.
The field that counts website visits is landingPageClicks. Every number below is on that field. If you are comparing your account against a $2–$5 CPC benchmark, you are comparing your real cost against someone else's inflated one.
What is a good cost per landing page click on LinkedIn?
| Setup | Median | Good (top quartile) | Exceptional (top decile) | Base |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thought leader ads, engagement objective | $14.71 | $8.37 | $3.15 | 212 accounts ★★★ |
| Sponsored content · single image · website visits objective | $11.75 | — | — | 219 accounts |
| Sponsored content · video · website visits | $12.01 | — | — | 74 |
| Thought leader ads · single image · engagement | $13.51 | — | — | 193 |
| Sponsored content · single image · engagement | $16.61 | — | — | 133 |
| Thought leader ads · brand awareness | $16.73 | — | — | 59 |
| Thought leader ads · video · engagement | $32.34 | — | — | 63 |
| UK, single image (Kiin operating range) | £6–£12 average | <£6 strong | — | 200+ accounts |
| UK, thought leader ad (Kiin operating range) | £8–£15 average | <£8 strong | — | 200+ accounts |
Three medians for a thought leader ad click appear in the study and they are different subsets: $14.71 (the 212-account benchmark set), $13.51 (single image engagement TLAs, 193 accounts) and $17.22 (the 36 accounts running both objectives, paired). Cite $14.71 as the benchmark. The spread is 15.6× from the 10th to the 90th percentile — the cheapest ten accounts pay $1.22, the most expensive ten pay $61.92 — so "median" is a starting point, not a target.
What actually decides your CPC
Across 181 accounts, 63% of the variance in cost per landing page click is CPM (r = +0.745) and 28% is click rate. The click rate barely moves between accounts — landing page CTR is 0.41–0.59% across every audience size and identical between thought leader ads and sponsored content (0.449% vs 0.441%). The price of the impression is what moves. So a CPC problem is a CPM problem, and CPM is set by four things:
| Setting | Cheapest 10 accounts | Most expensive 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Audience size | 105,000 | 17,000 |
| Daily budget per 1,000 audience members | $0.26 | $8.38 |
| Bid | $1.82 | $6.96 |
| Share of spend on uploaded lists / retargeting | 4% | 94% |
Campaign count, creatives per campaign, frequency, bid type and seniority filter were the same in both groups. The checklist — audience 30,000 or more · under $2 a day per 1,000 members · at least half the spend cold · bid $3 or under — takes an account from $25.46 per landing page click with no boxes ticked to $6.42 with all four. Each box alone is worth 1.6–2.2×. The month-by-month and audience-size CPM tables behind this are on LinkedIn CPM benchmarks.
Budget pressure: the click doubles between $0.50 and $2
The unit that predicts your CPC is dollars per day per 1,000 targeted members. Under $0.50 a day per 1,000, the median landing page click is $8.07; at $1–$2 it is $16.19; at $5–$10, $22.00 (940 campaigns, 82,700 campaign-days ★★★). The same $50 a day costs $35.04 per click on an audience under 10,000 and $13.59 on one over 100,000. Doubling a campaign's daily spend costs 26% more per click and returns 59% more clicks. If a campaign needs more spend, widen the audience before you raise the budget.
Bid amount, not bid type
Within the same 67 accounts, the highest-bid campaign pays 104% more per landing page click [+40%, +154%] and 128% more per engagement than the lowest, and gets 32% less engagement. CPC vs CPM bidding makes no difference: every confidence interval spans zero at every audience size. Enhanced conversion optimisation makes it worse (+56% per engagement). Bid low, manually, and stop testing the bid type.
Format: buy the click where it is cheapest
The cheapest landing page click on LinkedIn is single image sponsored content on the website visits objective, $11.75. Thought leader ads on engagement are $13.51 — within the same account they beat company-page ads on the same objective by 22%, but sponsored content on traffic beats both by 52–59%. Video thought leader ads are $32.34, 2.4× single image. So: if the click is the job, sponsored content on website visits. If the job is being read and remembered by a named audience, thought leader ads — and judge them on engagement rate and cost per engagement, not CPC.
Who you target changes the click less than you think
Cost per landing page click runs $12.51–$13.47 across every seniority tier — senior IC to CXO — while engagement rises with seniority (3.46% to 4.42%). Campaigns with no seniority filter pay the most, $16.88. One job function costs $12.51 a click; seven or more, $19.12. Technical and operational functions cost 50–100% more to reach than marketing or HR (IT $19.21, QA $22.17, entrepreneurship $9.60). An uploaded list costs 2.1× more per person reached than cold and performs like cold; true retargeting of site visitors costs the same per click (+14%, spanning zero) and buys +25% engagement for it.
What does not change your CPC
- Hook, post length, whether there is a link: +2% engagement, nothing on cost.
- Boosted vs purpose-built post: cost per click −12%, not significant.
- Launch day or hour: r = 0.00.
- Time live: cost per click, CPM and dwell are flat over eight weeks. Fatigue shows in engagement rate first, and cost per click moves a month late.
- Bid type.
UK cost per click in pounds
Quoted UK CPCs of £2–£5 are cost per total click. Real cost per landing page click runs £5–£7 for single image, £6–£12 for document ads and £8–£25 for thought leader ads; Kiin's operating range calls under £6 strong for single image and under £8 strong for a thought leader ad. UK audiences of 15,000–40,000 sit in the budget-pressure zone above, which is why UK clicks are usually a spend-per-member problem rather than an auction problem. Full GBP ranges are on LinkedIn Ads cost UK.
How to bring your cost per click down, in order
- Switch the report to landing page clicks. Everything else is diagnosis on a wrong number.
- Widen the audience past 30,000.
- Cut daily budget to under $2 per 1,000 members — or widen further.
- Move at least half the spend off uploaded lists onto cold targeting.
- Bid $3 or under, manual, CPM on engagement. Audience Network off.
- If the click is the job, move to sponsored content on the website visits objective.
- Then, and only then, creative — and change the author before the hook.
