LinkedIn Ad Specs and Sizes 2026: every format in one table, with what each one costs

Quick Answer
LinkedIn single image ads should be 1200 x 628 (1.91:1), 1200 x 1200 (1:1) or 720 x 900 (4:5) as JPG, PNG or GIF under 5 MB, with 150 characters of intro text and a 70-character headline. Video ads take MP4 from 3 seconds to 30 minutes, up to 500 MB, in any ratio between 9:16 and 16:9. Carousels take 2 to 10 square cards at 1080 x 1080 (10 MB each). Document ads take PDF, DOC or PPT up to 100 MB and 300 pages. Message and conversation ads allow 8,000 characters. Every format's specs are below, next to what it costs: across 944 accounts single image runs at a $48 CPM and a $13.63 cost per landing page click, video $41 and $33.68, carousel $54 and $14.01, document $62 and $101, thought leader ads $63 and $25.02.

LinkedIn publishes its ad specs across fifteen separate pages and changes them a couple of times a year, and none of those pages tell you what a format costs or how often anyone clicks it. This page puts the specs for every format in one place and, under each one, the benchmark from Kiin Labs' 944-account panel so you can pick a format on the numbers as well as the pixel sizes. Specs are LinkedIn's; the numbers are ours (median account, 12 months to 7 September 2026, LinkedIn Audience Network excluded). Formats are ordered by how much B2B budget goes into them.

What it costs (774 accounts): CPM $48.02 · total CTR 0.65% · landing page CTR 0.37% · cost per landing page click $13.63 · engagement rate 1.16%. On the website visits objective the landing page click drops to $11.33, the cheapest click on LinkedIn. With a lead gen form: $189 per content lead, $600 per demo lead at 2.1% completion, which is the worst common setup on the platform.

Kiin notes. Square is the safe default because it serves everywhere; LinkedIn's own guidance is that 4:5 vertical gets the best mobile CTR, and mobile is most of the feed, so we run 1:1 and 4:5 versions of the same ad and let the ad set split them. The old 1:1.91 vertical still works but now gets side borders. Keep text on the image outside the bottom 20% where the headline bar sits on mobile. GIFs are accepted but play as a static first frame in most placements.

Video ad specs

Native video in the feed, autoplays muted. Runs on the video views, engagement, brand awareness, website visits and lead generation objectives.

What it costs (504 accounts): CPM $40.93 · view rate 10.1% (good 21%, exceptional 35%) · 75% completion rate 4.3% · cost per view $0.43 · landing page CTR 0.12% · cost per landing page click $33.68. On the video views objective views cost 18% less than on brand awareness and completions 25% less than on engagement, paired in the same accounts. Auto "maximise views" beats a manual CPV bid by 21% on CPM.

Kiin notes. Video is a reach and retargeting-pool format, not a click format: a landing page click costs three times what a single image click costs. Run it on video views, build 50% and 75% viewer audiences, and retarget those with single image or thought leader ads. Under 30 seconds for cold audiences, captions always (autoplay is muted), the point in the first three seconds. Vertical 4:5 or 9:16 for mobile; 16:9 only if you need desktop. Our video funnel guide covers the structure.

What it costs (106 accounts): CPM $54.01 · total CTR 0.43% · landing page CTR 0.34% · cost per landing page click $14.01 · engagement rate 0.74%. On the engagement objective the click drops to $11.90 (24 accounts). Lead gen form cost per lead is withheld: too few accounts to report, but 29 form opens per lead is the highest of any feed format.

Kiin notes. Carousels cost 12% more per impression than single image and click about the same, so they earn their place only when the story needs the swipe: a process, a before-and-after, a set of features, a multi-stat report. Put the ask on card one; most viewers never reach card three. LinkedIn's carousel spec has not changed since 2023 and still lacks video cards, which is why we build "video carousels" as document ads instead.

What it costs (154 accounts): CPM $61.77 · total CTR 3.32% (opening the document counts as a click) · landing page CTR 0.06% · engagement rate 6.75%. With a content lead gen form: $180 per lead, 20.3% completion, 5 form opens per lead, and 22% cheaper per lead than a single image with the same offer in the same account (46 accounts). On the lead generation objective the CPM is $52.74, lower than single image's $74.06.

Kiin notes. The best format on LinkedIn for a content lead and the worst for website traffic; do not attach a landing page objective to it. Five to eight pages, square or A4 portrait, one idea per page, the form gate after page two or three. The document is scraped by LinkedIn into text, so a deck with real words on the pages targets better than one that is all images. Do not upload the full report: gate it.

Thought leader ad specs

What it costs (464 accounts, the dedicated study): CPM $65 at the median account (good $36, exceptional $21) · landing page CTR 0.45% · total CTR 4.56%, of which 91% never reach a landing page · engagement rate 4.46% · dwell time 7.0 seconds · cost per landing page click $14.71. Paired against the company-page version of the same ad: 22% cheaper per landing page click on engagement, 47% cheaper on brand awareness. Video thought leader ads: $32.34 per landing page click, 52% view rate.

Kiin notes. The format that gets read, and the reason the "clicks" column in Campaign Manager lies: reactions, comments and "see more" are all clicks. Report on landing page clicks. Engagement objective on audiences under 30,000, brand awareness above. Because there is no headline or CTA, the first two lines of the post are the whole ad; write them for the "see more" cut. The full study is at Thought Leader Ads Benchmarks 2026 and the how-to at what are thought leader ads.

Event ad specs

Promotes a LinkedIn Event (live audio, live video or external). The card pulls the banner and details from the Event page; since 2025 it can run on the lead generation objective with a registration form.

What it costs (75 accounts): CPM $49.36 · total CTR 0.70% · landing page CTR 0.25% · cost per landing page click $21.61 · engagement rate 0.92%. On website visits the click is $11.14 (20 accounts).

Kiin notes. Fine for webinars if the event lives on LinkedIn; if registration happens on your site, a single image ad to the registration page gets the same click for less and lets you retarget by page visit. Registrations from the LinkedIn Event page are not leads unless you use the lead gen objective.

Article and newsletter ad specs

Article ads only: the CTA reads 'Unlock Article' and gates the article behind a form

Kiin notes. Too new and too few accounts in the panel to report a benchmark. The gated article on the lead generation objective is the interesting one: the same mechanic as a document ad, with a newsletter subscription attached. We are testing it on two accounts; numbers in the next benchmark refresh.

Message ad and conversation ad specs

Both are delivered to the inbox from a named sender's profile and both count sends and opens rather than impressions. A message ad is one message with one CTA; a conversation ad is a branching script with up to five CTA buttons per message. LinkedIn stopped delivering both in the EU in 2022 and restored them in 2024 with a member opt-in, which is why EU sends are cheaper and fewer.

What it costs (263 accounts, the dedicated study): conversation ad open rate 42.6% (good 48.8%) · cost per send $0.42 (content $0.36, demo $0.49 to $0.57) · cost per lead $200 at the median account, $85 good, $32 exceptional · lead rate 0.09% of sends. Message ads are the cheapest lead on LinkedIn: $56 per content lead, $175 per demo lead, with 40.7% form completion inside the message against 2.2% for a demo form in the feed. Highest-bid campaigns pay 80% more per send than lowest-bid in the same account for the same open rate.

Kiin notes. The 8,000-character limit is not an invitation: under 500 characters, a question in the first line, sender is a person the recipient might plausibly know, no banner (desktop only, and it screams ad). Bid low; a send costs what you bid. Retargeting audiences open 18% more and produce 71% more leads per send than cold. The full data is in Conversation Ads Benchmarks 2026.

Lead gen form specs

Not a format but an attachment to one: single image, video, carousel, document, thought leader, event, message and conversation ads can all carry a form on the lead generation objective. LinkedIn pre-fills profile fields; the member taps submit.

What it costs (489 advertisers, the dedicated study): cost per lead $164 for a content offer and $343 for a demo request at the median account · feed completion 10.8% content, 2.2% demo · in-message completion 40.7% · a phone number field cuts completion by 66% · form vs landing page, same account: 55% cheaper per lead, 82% cheaper on content offers.

Kiin notes. Work email plus name plus one qualifying question. Never phone. Put the form behind a document ad for content and inside a message ad for demos; the single image plus demo form combination is $600 a lead at 2.1% completion and we do not run it. The full study is at Lead Gen Forms Benchmarks 2026, and the setup, integrations and field-by-field guidance are in the lead gen forms guide.

What it costs (172 accounts): CPM $0.22 · CTR 0.00% (rounded: about 2 clicks per 100,000 impressions) · cost per click $4.81 · cost per landing page click $6.02.

Kiin notes. A retargeting and brand-recall line item at a few hundred dollars a month, nothing more. Bid CPC, never CPM, because almost nobody clicks. Run ten variants; LinkedIn rotates them and the click rate difference between the best and worst headline is large in relative terms and irrelevant in absolute terms.

Spotlight ad and follower ad specs (dynamic ads)

Right-rail ads personalised with the viewer's name and profile photo. Spotlight drives to a URL; follower ads drive to your Page's follow button.

Kiin notes. Follower ads are the only sensible way to buy Page followers, and Page followers are worth having because a follower who sees an organic post becomes a retargeting audience for free. Spotlight ads are text ads with a photo; treat them the same way.

Kiin notes. A reach format for accounts spending $30,000 a month or more, bought on a fixed CPM. Fifteen seconds, sound on, the brand in the first frame, and the same audience as the feed campaigns so the Companies tab can show the lift. How we run it is on the paid media page, and what it costs across 31 accounts ($25.76 CPM, 98.7% completion) is in the CTV benchmarks.

The character limits that actually matter

LinkedIn's limits are the maximum it will accept, which is not the same as what a member sees. Three cuts decide whether your copy is read:

How this page is maintained

Specs are taken from LinkedIn's official ads guide (business.linkedin.com/advertise/ads) and checked every six months; the date in the header is the last check. Benchmarks are from Kiin Labs' three 2026 reports and the 944-account whole-panel table and are refreshed each quarter. If LinkedIn publishes a change between checks, the ads guide wins and this page will be a few weeks behind it.

FAQ

What size should a LinkedIn ad image be? +
For a single image ad LinkedIn recommends 1200 x 628 pixels (1.91:1) for landscape, 1200 x 1200 (1:1) for square, and 720 x 900 (4:5) for vertical. Square delivers to both desktop and mobile and is the safest default; vertical only serves on mobile. Files must be JPG, PNG or GIF under 5 MB.
What are the LinkedIn video ad specs? +
MP4, 75 KB to 500 MB, 3 seconds to 30 minutes, 360 to 1920 pixels on each side, aspect ratio between 9:16 and 16:9 (4:5 and 1:1 also supported). LinkedIn recommends 30 fps and a custom thumbnail (JPG or PNG under 2 MB, same ratio as the video). Headline 70 characters (200 max), intro text 150 characters (600 max).
What is the character limit for LinkedIn ads? +
Single image, video and document ads: intro text 150 characters recommended (up to 600 for video, and anything past about 150 is hidden behind 'see more'), headline 70 characters. Carousel: intro 255, card headline 45. Event ads: intro 600. Message ads and conversation ads: 8,000 characters of message text, CTA 25 characters. Text ads: headline 25, description 75. Spotlight and follower ads: headline 50, description 70.
What are the LinkedIn carousel ad specs? +
2 to 10 cards, each a JPG or PNG at 1:1, at least 1080 x 1080 pixels, 10 MB maximum per card. Intro text 255 characters, card headline 45 characters. Carousel ads do not support video cards.
What are the LinkedIn document ad specs? +
PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT or PPTX up to 100 MB and 300 pages, though LinkedIn recommends under 10 pages. Any standard page size works (A4, Letter, square, landscape). Layers must be flattened and all pages must be the same size. Headline 70 characters, intro text 150.
What are the specs for LinkedIn thought leader ads? +
There are no separate specs: the ad is an existing post by a member, so it follows organic post limits (a single image or a video; multi-image posts, polls and documents cannot be sponsored). You cannot add a headline, intro text, CTA button or URL; any link in the original post stays clickable.
What are the LinkedIn message ad and conversation ad specs? +
Both send from a member's profile. Message text up to 8,000 characters, custom footer up to 20,000, CTA up to 25 characters, landing page URL required. An optional 300 x 250 pixel banner (JPG or PNG, 2 MB) shows on desktop only. Conversation ads add up to five CTA buttons per message and branching paths.
What are the LinkedIn CTV ad specs? +
MP4, 16:9, 1920 x 1080 recommended (1280 x 720 accepted), 6 to 60 seconds (6, 15, 30, 45 or 60 recommended), up to 500 MB, H.264, constant frame rate (23.98 to 30 fps), bit rate 15 to 40 Mbps recommended, 2-channel audio at 48 kHz and -23 LUFS.
What is the best LinkedIn ad size for mobile? +
Vertical 4:5 (720 x 900) for images and 4:5 or 9:16 for video. LinkedIn states that vertical gets the best mobile CTR, and mobile is the majority of feed impressions for most B2B accounts. Vertical images do not deliver to desktop, so run a 1:1 version alongside if desktop matters to you.
Which LinkedIn ad format has the best CTR? +
By landing page CTR, single image sponsored content on the website visits objective leads at 0.44%, with carousel at 0.34% and thought leader ads at 0.30% (0.45% on the engagement objective in the dedicated study). Which LinkedIn ad format is cheapest? +
Per impression: text ads ($0.22 CPM) and dynamic ads ($1.51 to $1.72) are cheapest but almost nobody clicks them. In the feed, video ($41 CPM) and single image ($48) are cheapest per impression; single image on website visits is the cheapest landing page click on LinkedIn at $11.75. Per lead, message ads are cheapest ($56 content, $175 demo).
How often does LinkedIn change its ad specs? +
Roughly twice a year, usually by adding ratios or raising limits rather than removing anything. Since 2024 LinkedIn added 4:5 as the recommended vertical ratio, raised video length to 30 minutes, added CTV and article ads, and extended thought leader ads to newsletters. This page is checked against LinkedIn's spec sheet every six months; the date at the top is the last check.
